MONUMENTS (2019)
The AR-installation Monuments invites viewers to create a monument from forgotten everyday objects, highlighting their significance in our digital age. The installation asks for the historical and emotional value of analog items displaced from our daily lives by digitalization.
In an augmented reality environment, visitors interact with virtual representations of these analog objects. Using tablets equipped with AR technology, viewers scan posters featuring image targets. When the tablet’s camera recognizes these targets, a 3D model of an outdated object appears on the screen. Visitors can then start constructing their personal, dynamic monument by moving to designated scannable regions on the floor. Once these floor patterns are recognized, the virtual objects are anchored in place, allowing users to expand their monument by scanning additional image targets and positioning objects within the activated floor areas.
Monuments is part of the Augmented Realms research collaboration at the Institute for Structure and Design, University of Innsbruck. This research initiative explores how AR technology can influence design processes and enhance interaction and communication within architectural contexts.
